Fes el-Bali
Fes el-Bali is the world's largest car-free urban area. Its medina is a living museum: tanneries, madrasas, and fondouks that have operated continuously since the 9th century. The city is the spiritual and artisanal heart of Morocco, a place where the call to prayer weaves through the noise of the souks like a thread through fabric.
The Chouara Tannery, visible from the surrounding leather shops, has used the same stone vessels and natural dyes for nearly a thousand years. The Bou Inania Madrasa, built in the 14th century, remains one of the finest examples of Marinid architecture. Fes does not perform its history. It lives it.
